Who we are
Who we areMissing Migrants Project is an initiative implemented since 2014 by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to document deaths and disappearances of people in the process of migration towards an international destination. As collecting information is challenging, all figures remain undercounted. The locations in most cases are approximate. Each number represents a person, as well as the family and community that they leave behind.

Good Practices on Objective 8 of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM): Save lives
In 2022, Heads of State gathered at the inaugural International Migration Review Forum to assess the progress of the Global Compact on Migration. In response to the ongoing crisis of migrant deaths and disappearances, they requested the Secretary-General, with the support of the United Nations Network on Migration, to include actionable recommendations on strengthening cooperation on missing migrants and providing humanitarian assistance to migrants in distress in his next biennial report. A workstream was formed for this purpose and the practices listed here were collected as part of its activities. Practices were submitted by various actors to the Migration Network Hub's Repository of Practices and underwent peer review by migration experts before being published. The Hub is the mandated knowledge exchange and connection platform of the Network called for by the GCM.
